The "Biggest Water Loser," a base-wide pool competition, is scheduled to begin the first week of February 2011.

The competition is open to anyone, but was designed especially for individuals who don't feel comfortable jumping right into a gym program, said Lu Rice, aquatics manager.

Participants will have the option of coming Monday through Friday at times convenient to them or at a specified group time, Mrs. Rice said.

Work-out options include swimming laps or walking in the pool, water aerobics, and playing pool games.

"Doing aerobics in the pool for 30 minutes is equal to working out 60 minutes on land," Mrs. Rice said.

Mrs. Rice also said topics will be discussed such as goals for the week, healthy eating and how to deal with diet "road blocks."

Each participant will be given a diary to chart food intake and water exercises, she said.

Participants will weigh-in the first and last day of the competition, as well as any time they want to. At the end of the competition, the winners for losing 5, 10 and 20 pounds, as well as the overall biggest loser pound for pound will be announced, she said.
