Now that the Air Force publishes sexual assault convictions online, anyone can review the more than 100 convictions from across the Air Force, including the ability to sort viewing by base.

After only a few minutes of reviewing cases, many similar criteria emerge, including:

1) The use of alcohol
2) The absence of personal respect for the victim
3) The absence of the victims' consent

You may also quickly notice that Airmen convicted of sexual assault are held accountable by military judges and court-martial panels with punishments that often include jail time, rank reductions, and punitive discharges.

A number of cases involve Airmen assaulting fellow Airmen. Many times victims were co-workers and former friends - people who trusted their assailant. The offenders violated that trust and were punished accordingly. As required by many state laws, convicted Airmen must also register in their jurisdiction's sexual assault registry. These publicly-available registries include names and addresses of convicted sex offenders and are online.

Effective two months ago, Airmen who commit a sexual assault will have administrative discharge proceedings initiated against them, and may be retained only if they pass a cumulative multi-part retention test. For 301st Fighter Wing Reserve Airmen, only Maj. Gen. William Binger, Tenth Air Force commander, can waive this requirement, after concluding the Airman passed the retention test.

I encourage all Airmen to visit the website and review the facts of the cases resulting in Airmen being convicted of sexual offenses. Educate and warn fellow Airmen about the consequences of committing these crimes. When you see a situation that isn't right, be a good Wingman, intervene and insist your fellow Airman treat others with respect. You might regret being a passive bystander if a few words of intervention could have prevented a crime that forever changes the lives of Airmen around you.
