301st Fighter Wing begins flight operations at Alliance Published July 31, 2013 By Senior Airman Melissa Harvey 301st Fighter Wing Public Affairs ALLIANCE , Texas -- NAVAL AIR STATION FORT WORTH JOINT RESERVE BASE, Texas - The 301st Fighter Wing began temporary flight operations at Fort Worth Alliance Airport July 31 while much-needed repairs are made to Carswell Field on NAS Fort Worth JRB. Military flying operations at Alliance Airport are scheduled to continue through August. Aircraft began moving to Alliance Airport Monday. The runway construction project will cancel all but a select few local flights at the joint reserve base. "Our runway is beyond its service life. It is breaking up, creating a FOD [Foreign Object Debris] hazard to all aircraft that use our runway," said Air Force Capt. Jason Kitchen, 457th Aircraft Maintenance Unit officer in charge. Kitchen said normal military runway service life is ten years. The base's current runway surface is 14 years old. Brig. Gen. Bruce Miller, 301st Fighter Wing commander, says this move is the most economically responsible way to allow for repairs while continuing the wing's mission as seamlessly as possible. "The 301st Fighter Wing's ability to continue flying is a necessity, as some of its Airmen are scheduled to deploy later this year. In addition, both our operations and maintenance groups have many requirements to complete in August," said Miller. More than 100 members assigned to the wing will temporarily work at Alliance Airport, fulfilling security, operations, and maintenance duties for the 20 aircraft at their temporary home. Wing leadership has taken measures to minimize impact on the local community. The wing intends to avoid night flying training. Additionally, relocated members may be transported by bus to ease additional traffic congestion. Repairing the airfield decreases risk of potential damage both to military aircraft assigned as well as all other aircraft using the installation's runways. The official mission of the 301st Fighter Wing is "...to deliver combat-ready airmen to fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace."
