NAVAL AIR STATION FORT WORTH JOINT RESERVE BASE, Texas -- I bid all 301st Fighter Wing personnel and their families a heartfelt wish for safety and security. The recent events in Dallas and Nice, France, remind us that danger lurks everywhere and may strike at a moment's notice.
While we can never predict when such an occurrence will happen, it is a reminder to us all of the need to be aware of our surroundings as well as to practice planning and awareness.
Whether attending an organized event, vacation, or a simple dinner with family and friends, you should use situational awareness.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself when out and about:
- What is the potential for adverse actions?
- Is there a history of criminal activity (both violent and non-violent) in the area?
- If indoors, where are the exits, both normal and emergency?
Here are a few reminders:
- Lock all doors and utilize parking that is well lite and preferably monitored
- Never leave items in plain sight in your vehicles. This is an open invitation for someone to break into your vehicle.
- Do not sit near windows. Not only is there a concern from bullets, but also a threat from flying debris and glass fragments.
- When driving, plan escape routes especially when stopped at lights or stop signs. Leave enough space between you and the car in front to allow for maneuvering in the case of emergencies. It does you no good to recognize a threat but yet be boxed in.
- If out with others, be it friends or family, have a rally point in case you get separated. You should continuously update the point as you move.
- Be suspicious of unattended objects. Clear the area immediately and notify authorities.
- If shooting starts, take cover and when possible immediately evacuate the affected area. Get accountability for those in your group.
- Be a people watcher. If you see something or someone suspicious, do not hesitate to notify police.
YOUR call might be the one that saves a life.
As always, stay alert and aware. If you see something, say something.
Remember: If traveling outside of the continental United States, please coordinate with your local Air Force Office of Special Investigation and Antiterrorism offices.
