Christmas is a time of year when we reflect on the many blessings our families have been afforded. It is also an opportunity for us to gather and to spend time catching up and sharing stories of the year that has passed. We are all so very busy so please set aside time for your family, call that relative you haven't spoken to in a long time and connect with your close friends.

If you know someone spending this holiday alone, please ask them to your table for a meal or to watch the parades and games on television. As a young lieutenant in training, one of my instructors invited me to spend Thanksgiving with his family. My store-bought food was no match for his wife's cooking, but nonetheless they incorporated my gifts into their celebration. The bond we formed from that special time has lasted for over 26 years and our friendship is stronger today after a recent reunion back at that Air Force base in Arizona. I can't emphasize enough the difference a small gesture can make in someone's life.

As always, be safe in your travels and pay attention to rapidly changing weather this time of year. Let someone know your travel plans and how to contact you along the way.

To our deployed members around the globe, we thank you for your voluntary service and both you and your families will be in our thoughts and prayers.
